They look as if they are just walking the edge of the
pool or sitting atop their lifeguard chair; relaxing poolside, getting a
tan and getting paid. In reality, a lifeguard’s job is to constantly
scan their zone to keep a check on swimmer’s safety. They must be at the
ready with their rescue tube, whistle, and air horn, ready to enter the
water to save someone in trouble.
Making a save can be a frightening experience for a
lifeguard, especially their first one. As they initiate a rescue the
adrenalin pumps through their body. They may think they won’t remember
all their instruction as they make the rescue, but their training all comes
back and they bring the swimmer to safety.
But before being put to the test, they spend long
hours in training. Well worth the time not only for the lifeguard but to
the person rescued. The training consists of lifesaving practices, rescue
operations, first-aid treatment and CPR administration.
Being a lifeguard can be a very rewarding job with
practical knowledge you can use the rest of your life. For more
