The Web contains an ever-growing collection of prairie resources. Here are some links to get you started:
- Bell Museum's On the Prairie Site
Includes a Build-A-Prairie game, a field guide to common plants and animals of the prairie and a virtual prairie tour. Appropriate for students.
- Fermilab Prairie Resources
Includes prairie plant and animal profiles and results of student research projects at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, Illinois. Appropriate for students.
- Homestead National Monument's Virtual Prairie
A video tour of Homestead National Monument in Nebraska, including landscape panoramas and plant photos that can be rotated in three dimensions. The videos are large and take a few minutes to load over a modem connection. Appropriate for students.
- Illinois Department of Natural Resources Web Site
A rich site that includes information on state parks, Illinois plants and animals, technical reports from IDNR scientists
and more.
- Illinois Natural History Survey's Tallgrass Prairie Web Site
Includes a photographic guide to prairie plants, background on prairie restoration, recommended plant lists, suggestions for visiting prairies in Illinois and more. Appropriate for students.
- Illinois State Museum's Prairie in Illinois Site
Includes field guides, an online restoration game and sections covering prairie restoration, planting prairie gardens and more. Appropriate for students.
- Midewin's Prairie Lesson Plans
Developed by Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie in conjunction with the OpenLands foundation, a variety of language arts, social studies and science/math lesson plans that incorporate the prairie.
- National Prairie Wildlife Research Center
A clearinghouse for scientific research on the flora and fauna of the prairie ecosystem. Provides online access to numerous scientific papers.
- Prairie Rivers Resource Conservation & Development
A nonprofit organization devoted to promoting conservation in Central Illinois through events such as Conservation Expo and participation in groups such as the Illinois River Bluffs Ecosystem Partnership.
