Ancient Oaks Day Camp: Ages 5-12
Ancient Oaks Day Camp is all about having fun and educational
experiences in the great outdoors. Weekly themes reflect on a variety of fun
events and plenty of hands-on activities and fun field trips. Located on 320
acres, Sommer Park consists of woods, open fields, hiking trails and ponds and a
new recreational park. Ancient Oaks Day Camp is the best place to be outdoors
this summer!
2008 Weekly Themes
June 2-6: Summer Fun at Sommer Park
Let the fun begin at Sommer Park! Start the week off learning about the new
park and other fun activities on site. Field trip: Peoria Park District Pool
June 9-13: Down On The Farm
This week is ideal for planting pumpkins near the cabin, making a garden to
take home, learning where our food comes from and interacting with farm animals.
Field trip: Local farm/orchard
June 16-20: Holiday Hoopla
We may not get snow in June but we’ll have our annual snowball contest and
other holiday fun in the sun. Field trip: Peoria Zoo & Picnic in the Park
June 23 -27: Wacky Water Week I
If you love water, this week is for you. Enjoy a day at the pool, water
games and sink the counselor. Field trip: Peoria Park District Pool. Family
night June 27
June 30 – July 3: – Red, White & Blue
Join us for a sparkling, colorful, patriotic week with crackling crafts,
sizzling activities, parade and a Thursday afternoon cook-out. NO CAMP JULY 4.
Field trip: Air National Guard
July 7 -11: Dinosaur Week
Step back into time & try to find AODC’s hidden dinosaurs, old fossils or
the magic dinosaur eggs. Field trip: TBA
July 14 -18: Sommer Survivor
Have fun playing survivor and competing against other teams for the GRAND
prize. Activities like canoe races, archery and more will make you a true
survivor. Field trip: TBA
July 21-25: Adventures in Art
Develop into an artist as you learn about art. Learn how to dye wool, make a
nature mobile and piñatas or your own lucky Ojo de Dios. Artwork will be
displayed at camp. Field trip: Local art exhibit/gallery Family night July 25
July 28 – August 1: Wacky Water Week II
You enjoyed it in June so let’s have it again with a day at the pool, water
games and sink the counselors. Field trip: Peoria Park District Pool.
August-8: Incredible Insects
Become an entomologist for a week and learn about butterflies, ants & other
creepy crawlers. Make your own neon butterfly net. Field trip: Wildlife Prairie
State Park.
August 11-15: Camper’s Choice
Enjoy the last week at camp by participating in all the outdoor activities
that you will miss once school starts.
Additional Camp Information
Camp Fees & Hours
Fee-R/NR: $100/$122 per week
Camp runs Monday-Friday, 8:30 am-4:00 pm. If these hours don’t fit your
schedule, Extended Camp Care supervision is available from 7:00-8:30am and
4:00-5:30pm for an additional $15/week/child. Be sure to add the Extended
Care code to your registration form!
Lunch/Snacks
We do not provide lunch, but do provide refrigeration for your child’s sack
lunch. We supply a morning snack and juice. Campers may bring money to buy soda
or snacks during their afternoon break.
Field Trips
The field trips listed here are tentative; for an exact schedule, consult the
weekly newsletter sent home with your camper. We reserve the right to close,
cancel, or change field trips. Per the Illinois Child Passenger Protection Act,
parents are responsible for providing booster seats for children 8 years and
younger when the park van is used for field trips.
Camp/Park Volunteers
We are looking for a limited number of 14-15 year olds interested in
volunteering at Ancient Oaks Day Camp. Tasks range from being a camp counselor’s
assistant to helping in the office or park. Apply to the Peoria Park District
Volunteer Coordinator at the Glen Oak Pavilion: 681-2822.
