    Coordinator of Special Events & Recreation - RiverFront

    POSITION: Full Time

    PURPOSE AND SUMMARY:

    The Coordinator of Special Events & Recreation has responsibility for the coordination of RiverFront events and festivals in addition to Recreation programs and activities, as assigned.  The position will be focused on RiverFront events from March – October and the Coordinator’s duties will be shifted towards the District’s Recreation activities and facilities during the November – February timeframe.  The Coordinator position will be heavily focused (estimate of 60-70%) on event-site work as it relates to the RiverFront, including, but not limited to, overseeing event set-up/tear-down, supervising support staff, and working evening/weekend hours based on the facility schedule.

     

    In collaboration and under the general supervision of the Supervisor of RiverFront Events, the Coordinator of Special Events & Recreation is responsible for a number of specific tasks as outlined below under responsibilities.

     

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Exercising independent judgement in planning, organizing, promoting, supervising and evaluating RiverFront programs and other Park District special events.
    • Supervising set-up/tear-down crews and volunteers for events, often acting as the Lead Worker. Typical setup activities include placement of tents, setting up tables and chairs, helping vendors connect to power sources, hanging signs, setting out materials such as program books, installing trash boxes and following event diagrams to place exhibitors in the correct location.
    • Selecting part time personnel for RiverFront events, conducting orientation, training and evaluation of employees, interns and volunteers whom the Coordinator is directly responsible.
    • Working closely with personnel overseeing and ensuring that all concessions operations run as smoothly and efficiently as possible. Perform routine inventory of bar supplies, assist bartenders as needed and oversee cash flow in concession locations.
    • Working closely and acting as a liaison with committees and other agencies to produce a specified number of community events. Provide the logistics, on-site, pre- and post-event planning as needed or directed.
    • Planning, scheduling and supervising the operation of RiverFront Park and events to include a written annual evaluation. Provide on-site technical expertise to event organizers.
    • Act as a solicitor of vendors and exhibitors for assigned events. Managing contracts to include implementation, initiation and follow-up.
    • Establishing and maintaining files of correspondence, records, reports and other information related to RiverFront & Recreation Operations.
    • Assisting in planning and coordination of Recreation activities and special events at the District’s non-RiverFront facilities.
    • Prepares and submits records and reports including registration, attendance, payroll, schedules and other documentation as requested.
    • Following all safety procedures that pertain to the duties performed. Supports all aspects of the Park District’s safety program.
    • Performs all other duties as assigned.

     

    SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES WILL HAVE:

    • Four year college degree in Parks/Recreation & Tourism, Business or or a closely related field. Although a degree is preferred, extensive experience in a like position with similar duties and responsibilities may be substituted for all or part of the educational requirement.
    • Two years field experience in facility scheduling, special events and recreation programming and implementation preferred.
    • Working knowledge of computers and general office procedures necessary, combined with a thorough knowledge of facility promotion, scheduling and function planning and follow-up. Extensive knowledge of business office procedures.
    • Understanding of basic philosophy underlying a sound community recreation program and ability to interpret that to staff and public.
    • Ability to work cooperatively with representatives of community, public and private groups and organizations and relate community interests to recreational programming.
    • Ability to train, supervise and evaluate part time employees and volunteers.
    • Ability to communicate effectively in speaking and writing.
    • Understanding of Park District finance with ability to apply and interpret knowledge in practical situations related to facility operations and programs.
    • Ability to work harmoniously with the public, fellow employees and volunteers in an enthusiastic and cooperative manner.

    Park Manager - Glen Oak Park

    POSITION: Full Time

    In collaboration and under the supervision of the Supervisor of Parks – Landscape Maintenance, the Park Manager – Glen Oak Park is responsible for a number of specific tasks as outlined below.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Maintenance and general appearance of Glen Oak Park, including buildings, facilities and grounds.
    • Mow grass, trim shrubs and provide general care for all plants in the park.
    • Perform and instruct the preventative maintenance on all equipment. Schedule maintenance work and procedures and keep time records as required.
    • Safety aspects of buildings and grounds, including walkways, roads, playground equipment and other facilities. Regular inspections of all areas. Report and correct all hazards, vandalism and undesirable conditions immediately.
    • Supervise full and part-time workers assigned to maintenance operations of the park.
    • Requisition supplies and equipment required for general maintenance work in the park.
    • Make arrangements as required for groups and activities scheduled in the park and coordinate with special events.
    • Maintain and prepare athletic fields as required. Maintain tennis courts and supervise installation of tennis nets and wind screens.
    • Prepare annual budget. Keep an accurate accounting of all expenditures within the budget.
    • Perform all other duties as assigned.

    SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES WILL HAVE:

    • Bachelor’s degree in horticulture, park & recreation management or related field preferred, with at least two years of experience. A two year Associate’s degree in this field and four years or experience may also be considered. Although a degree is preferred, extensive experience in a like position with similar duties and responsibilities may be substituted for all or part of the educational requirement.
    • Experience in grounds maintenance and operation of tractors, mowing equipment and other machinery used in grounds maintenance.
    • Knowledge of and experience in utilizing fertilizers and pesticides and calibration of associated equipment.
    • Experience in building maintenance and equipment and materials used therein.
    • Supervisory experience of staff.
    • Possess good knowledge of plant material, soil characteristics and their requirements and of preventative maintenance procedures for associated equipment.
    • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
    • Insight into sound business management practices, personnel management and public relations.

    Mechanic III - Parks Division

    POSITION: Full Time

    In collaboration and under the supervision of the Fleet Manager, the Mechanic III is responsible for a number of specific tasks as outlined below.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Diagnose, repair and perform service work on various machines, including but not limited to; heavy equipment, trucks, small engines, trailers, gas and diesel engines.
    • Communicate effectively with vendors for the acquisition of parts and services.
    • Follow all safety procedures that pertain to the duties performed and support all aspects of the Park District’s safety program.
    • Completes field work as directed.
    • Perform all other duties as assigned.

    SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES WILL HAVE:

    • High school diploma required. Junior college certificate preferred.
    • Minimum of two years as a mechanic preferred.
    • S.E. certified in at least two of the basic certification areas. Able to follow written and oral instructions.
    • Work record that demonstrates dependability.
    • Able to work harmoniously with Park District personnel.
    • Must possess a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
